Resting heart rate (RHR). Measured over time, RHR is one of the more trustworthy wearable signals. A resting rate that jumps up for several days for no obvious reason can hint at illness, poor sleep, alcohol or stress. The CDC notes that regular activity helps reduce blood pressure and supports heart health, so this metric ties directly to something that matters.

Sleep duration. Total time asleep is the sleep number to care about most. MedlinePlus and the CDC both put healthy adult sleep at roughly 7 to 9 hours, with the CDC recommending 7 or more hours for adults aged 18 to 60. Your watch's estimate of total sleep is usually in the right ballpark and useful for spotting a pattern of short nights.

Metrics to treat with caution

These numbers aren't worthless, but they are softer than they look.

Sleep stages and "sleep score." Wearables guess at light, deep and REM sleep from movement and heart rate. MedlinePlus explains that real sleep cycles through non-REM stages and REM, but a wrist device cannot measure brain waves the way a clinical sleep study does. Treat the stage breakdown and the single "score" as entertainment-grade. Total hours and consistency are the parts worth trusting.

Heart rate variability (HRV). HRV, the variation between heartbeats, can loosely reflect stress and recovery. The catch is that it swings with hydration, alcohol, measurement timing and the device itself. Watch your own multi-week trend, never a single morning reading, and never compare your absolute number to a friend's.

Calorie burn. Calorie estimates are among the least accurate wearable outputs. They combine assumptions about your body and movement that can be well off. Use them as a relative gauge of an easier versus harder day, not as a precise budget to "eat back."

Blood oxygen, ECG and cycle tracking. These consumer features can be reassuring and occasionally useful, but they are screening-grade convenience tools, not medical instruments. An irregular-rhythm notification or a consistently low oxygen reading is a reason to see a clinician, not a diagnosis on its own. Cycle tracking can help some people notice patterns, but predictions are estimates, not guarantees, and shouldn't be relied on as a sole method for anything medically important.

How to read a metric without overreacting

The most common wearable mistake is reading a single data point as if it were a verdict. Almost every number here is meaningful only as a trend over days or weeks. One short night, one elevated morning HRV reading, one slightly off oxygen value tells you very little. Several days moving in the same direction tells you more. Before you act on any number, ask three questions: Is this a one-off or a pattern? Is there an obvious explanation, such as alcohol, illness, travel or a late night? And does it actually match how I feel? Your own body is a better sensor than your wrist for many things, and the device works best when it confirms or gently challenges what you already notice, rather than overriding it.

Ignore the rest of the dashboard for a few weeks. The point of a wearable is behavior change, not data collection. A device that quietly nudges you to walk after lunch or wind down 30 minutes earlier has earned its place; one that makes you anxious about a sleep score has not.
